Feroglobin B12, a Liquid Iron Supplement

A liquid iron supplement helps rebuild the red blood cells that carry oxygen around your body, and it is the reason the tiredness that comes with running low on iron begins to lift.

Feroglobin B12 suits women whose periods are heavy, anyone coming back from illness or surgery, growing children, people eating little or no red meat, and anybody who has tried iron tablets before and given up because of what they did to their stomach. It is a honey and malt liquid rather than a tablet, and the whole design of it is about being easy to keep taking.

Why a Liquid Iron Supplement Is Easier to Live With

Most people who stop taking iron stop because of their stomach, rather than because they got better. Constipation, nausea and that heavy metallic feeling are the usual reasons an iron tablet ends up at the back of a drawer.

A liquid works differently. There is nothing to swallow whole, the amount can be measured to the person rather than fixed by a tablet, and a child can take it from a spoon. The honey and malt base is there to make it pleasant rather than to add anything clinical, and it does its job: this tastes like something you would drink.

The Iron Form That Changes Everything

The iron here is ferric ammonium citrate, rather than the ferrous sulphate in most cheap iron tablets.

That single choice is why so many people who could not tolerate iron before get on with this one. It is gentler on the gut lining, and it is the reason the product has the reputation it has among people who have been through two or three other iron supplements.

Vitamin C in the Same Spoonful

Each dose carries 20mg of vitamin C alongside the iron, and that pairing is doing real work. Vitamin C increases iron absorption, which is an approved European health claim, and it matters more in Kenya than almost anywhere.

Most of the iron on a Kenyan plate is plant iron, from beans, njahi, ndengu, sukuma wiki, managu and terere. Plant iron is harder for the body to take up than the iron in meat. Strong tea with a meal, which is a national habit, works against it further, because the tannins bind the iron before it can be absorbed.

Having the vitamin C in the same spoonful as the iron means that battle is already won before the liquid reaches your stomach.

What Each Dose Gives You

Per 10ml, which is the adult daily amount: iron 14mg, vitamin B12 10 micrograms, folic acid 300 micrograms, zinc 10mg, vitamin C 20mg and lysine 80mg, with B vitamins, honey and malt extract.

Between them these carry a remarkable run of approved European health claims. Iron contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin, to normal oxygen transport, to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, to normal cognitive function and to the normal function of the immune system. Vitamin B12 and folic acid contribute to normal red blood cell formation and to reducing tiredness. Zinc contributes to normal immune function and normal cognitive function. And vitamin C increases iron absorption. That is one liquid covering the whole of what a person low on iron actually needs.

For Children, and How Much

This is one of the few iron products with a proper children’s schedule printed by the manufacturer. Children aged three to six take half a teaspoon twice daily. Children aged seven to twelve take one teaspoon, once or twice daily. Adults take one teaspoon, which is 5ml, twice daily.

Iron is also the one supplement that has to be kept properly out of reach. In excess it is genuinely harmful to a very young child, so the bottle belongs in a high cupboard rather than on the kitchen counter, and we would rather you spoke to us before giving it to anyone under three.

Who This Liquid Iron Supplement Is For

Women with heavy periods, who lose more iron each month than most diets replace. People recovering from illness, surgery or childbirth. Growing children and teenagers, particularly girls once periods begin. Vegetarians and anyone whose diet is built on beans and greens rather than meat. Blood donors. And anyone who has been told their iron is low and wants something they will still be taking in three months.

How to Take It, and What to Expect

One teaspoon twice daily for adults, and it can be continued for as long as you need it. Take it with or just after a meal, ideally the one with the beans or greens, and leave an hour between the dose and a cup of strong tea or coffee.

Energy is usually the first thing people notice, over two to four weeks, because your body starts using the iron before the stores are anywhere near refilled. Rebuilding those stores takes three months or more, which is why stopping as soon as you feel better is the commonest mistake with iron. If a blood test is what started this, have another before you decide you are finished.

Is a Liquid Iron Supplement Right for You?

Iron is one of the most useful supplements there is and one of the few worth being careful with. Our pharmacist is glad to go through it with you first if any of these apply:

  • You are buying for a child, especially one under three, and in every case keep the bottle well out of reach, because iron in excess is genuinely harmful to a very young child.
  • You already take another iron product or a multivitamin containing iron, so we can add up your daily total.
  • You have haemochromatosis or any condition where iron builds up, which is the one situation where extra iron works against you.
  • You have epilepsy, a thyroid disorder or food allergies, or you are pregnant or breastfeeding, all of which the manufacturer asks you to check first.

Darker stools are normal with any iron and nothing to worry about. If your stomach objects, taking it with food usually settles it.

Storing It

Store below 25 degrees in a dry place out of sight and reach of children. Once opened, keep it in the fridge and finish it within eight weeks. A sealed bottle that has been opened belongs in the fridge door, not the cupboard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a liquid iron supplement good for?

Rebuilding red blood cells and lifting the tiredness that comes with running low on iron. Iron contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin, to normal oxygen transport and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, all approved European health claims. Feroglobin adds B12, folic acid, zinc and vitamin C to the same spoonful.

Why liquid rather than iron tablets?

Because most people who stop taking iron stop because of their stomach. A liquid is gentler, nothing has to be swallowed whole, the amount can be measured to the person, and a child can take it from a spoon. The iron here is ferric ammonium citrate rather than the ferrous sulphate in most cheap tablets, which is the main reason people who could not tolerate iron before get on with this.

How much should I take?

Adults, one teaspoon of 5ml twice daily. Children aged seven to twelve, one teaspoon once or twice daily. Children aged three to six, half a teaspoon twice daily. Ask our pharmacist before giving it to anyone under three.

How long before I feel a difference?

Energy usually lifts within two to four weeks, because your body uses the iron before the stores are refilled. Refilling the stores takes three months or more, and stopping as soon as you feel better is the commonest mistake with iron.

Can I take it with tea?

Leave an hour between the dose and strong tea or coffee. The tannins in tea bind iron and stop some of it being absorbed, which matters in a country where chai comes with the meal. The vitamin C in the liquid pushes in the other direction, so timing gives you both advantages.

Why is there vitamin C in an iron supplement?

Because vitamin C increases iron absorption, which is an approved European health claim. It matters especially on a diet built around beans, ndengu and greens, since plant iron is harder to take up than the iron in meat.

Is it safe for children?

There is a printed children’s schedule from three years upward, which is rare for an iron product. But iron in excess is genuinely harmful to a very young child, so keep the bottle high up and out of reach, and speak to us before giving it to anyone under three.

Is it suitable for vegans?

It is suitable for vegetarians and approved by the Vegetarian Society. It contains honey, so vegans will want something else and our pharmacist can point you to an alternative iron product.

Will it turn my stools black?

Very likely, and that is normal with any iron supplement. It is the unabsorbed iron passing through and it is nothing to worry about.

Can I take it if I am pregnant?

Speak to our pharmacist or your clinic first. Iron and folic acid are both important in pregnancy and are often prescribed, so the point is to add up what you are already getting rather than to avoid it.

How do I store it once opened?

In the fridge, and finish it within eight weeks. Unopened, keep it below 25 degrees in a dry place away from children.
