This convex ostomy bag helps stop the leaks and the sore skin that come when a stoma sits level with the abdomen or slightly below it, because the adhesive plate is domed rather than flat and presses gently into the skin around the stoma so the stoma stands proud of the surface. It is cut to fit from 15 to 43 mm. Convexity is a clinical decision, so please let our doctor look at the stoma before you buy.

A Convex Ostomy Bag for a Stoma That Sits Flat or Low

This convex ostomy bag helps stop the leaks and the sore skin that come when a stoma sits level with the abdomen or slightly below it, because the adhesive plate is domed rather than flat and presses gently into the skin around the stoma so the stoma stands proud of the surface. That lets the seal sit on skin instead of over a dip, and it is the usual answer when a flat bag has kept lifting however carefully it was applied.

Convexity is a clinical decision rather than a shopping one, and we would rather you came in before you bought this. Please have our doctor or a stoma nurse look at the stoma and the shape of the abdomen around it first, because a domed plate fitted to the wrong abdomen presses where it should not and can damage the skin underneath. That assessment is free, it takes a few minutes, and it is the single most useful thing we can do for somebody whose bags keep failing.

Who a Convex Ostomy Bag Suits

The pattern is recognisable. A stoma that is flush with the skin, or has retracted below it, output that tunnels sideways under the adhesive instead of dropping into the pouch, a bag that lifts at one edge within a few hours, and a crease, scar or soft dip in the abdomen right beside the stoma.

In that situation a flat plate bridges the hollow, output gets underneath, the skin becomes sore and then nothing sticks at all. A convex plate fills the hollow and holds the stoma forward. It also suits some people whose abdomen is soft and gives way under the plate as they move. Our doctor will tell you which applies to you, and whether a light or a deeper convexity is right, because they are different products and the depth matters as much as the fact of it.

Why the Cut Range Is Narrower

This bag is cut to fit from 15 to 43 mm, where the flat version of the same bag covers 12 to 75 mm. That is a property of the dome: the moulded shape only works across a smaller band of openings, so the range is narrower by design.

Trace your stoma onto the guide that comes with the bag, cut to that outline with curved scissors, and keep it a snug fit, staying inside the last printed circle. Precision matters more here than on a flat plate, because the dome holds the stoma forward and an opening cut too wide lets it sit back down into it. Bring the guide in and let our pharmacist cut the first few with you. Where your stoma measures above 43 mm, please come and talk to us, because the answer is a different product rather than this one trimmed harder.

Putting One On

Have the skin clean and dry, with warm water and a soft cloth, patted properly dry and nothing greasy underneath. Peel the protective paper by the tab while holding the plate, then press the adhesive on from the bottom and smooth upwards.

With a convex plate the pressing matters. Hold a warm palm over the whole plate for a minute afterwards, which softens the adhesive and lets the dome settle in. Many people use a stoma belt with a convex appliance, hooked to the loops on the plate, because the belt holds the dome in even contact and the two work better together than either alone. Ask our pharmacist about a belt when you collect your first box. To remove one, work downwards slowly while holding the skin taut, since a domed plate has more adhesive in contact than a flat one.

What to Watch on the Skin Underneath

This is the part that makes a convex appliance different from everything else on this shelf, and it is why the assessment comes first. A dome applies pressure, and skin under steady pressure can break down the way it does under a tight strap or a long sit.

So look at the skin each time you change the bag, in good light. A faint ring that fades within an hour of the plate coming off is ordinary. A ring that stays, a bruise, a shiny or taut patch, a blister, a dark or purple mark, pain under the plate while you are wearing it, or any broken skin in the shape of the dome all mean the appliance comes off and you come to us the same day. Pain is the signal people ignore and it is the one that matters most: a convex plate should be felt as firm contact rather than as discomfort.

And Please Have These Checked First

There are situations where a domed plate wants a doctor’s judgement rather than a shop assistant’s, and they are common ones. A bulge or hernia around the stoma. Recent abdominal surgery, where the tissue is still healing. Skin that is already broken, infected or sore in the area. Crohn’s disease or any condition that makes the skin fragile. Radiotherapy to the abdomen. Diabetes with reduced sensation, where pressure can be doing harm without being felt.

None of those rules convexity out, and plenty of people in each group use a convex appliance safely. They are reasons to be assessed rather than reasons to give up, and our doctor will weigh them alongside the shape of your abdomen. Please also let him review it after a few weeks, because the stoma and the abdomen both change in the first months and the depth that was right in week two may be wrong in week ten.

When to Come and See Us the Same Day

A healthy stoma is pink or red and moist, and a little surface bleeding on cleaning is ordinary. A stoma that turns dark red, purple, grey, black or dry needs seeing the same day, and so does one that retracts further or suddenly protrudes much more than usual.

Pressure damage under the plate is the other same-day matter, and the signs are in the section above. With an ileostomy, cramping pain with watery output then nothing, a swollen stoma, nausea or vomiting mean a possible blockage and a trip to hospital. High output with thirst, dark scanty urine, cramps or light-headedness is dehydration, so please see our doctor and ask us about oral rehydration salts.

What We Can Honestly Tell You

This bag costs more than the flat version and the cut range is smaller, and both of those are real differences rather than a price difference. It is the right product for a flush or retracted stoma assessed by somebody who has looked at it, and the wrong product bought as a general upgrade.

So if your bags are failing and nobody has examined the stoma yet, start with the flat transparent bag and an appointment with our doctor, since a badly cut opening and a crease under the plate account for most failures and cost nothing to fix. Where you would rather change the pouch without disturbing the adhesive, ask about our two-piece base plate, and our pharmacist will set up a standing monthly delivery in plain outer packaging once we know what you settle on.

Is This Convex Ostomy Bag Right for You?

Please talk to our doctor before you buy if any of these apply.

  • Nobody has examined the stoma and the abdomen around it. Please come in first. Convexity is a clinical decision and the assessment is free.
  • A bulge or hernia around the stoma, recent surgery, broken or infected skin, Crohn’s disease, radiotherapy to the abdomen, or diabetes with reduced sensation. All reasons to be assessed rather than reasons to give up.
  • Your stoma measures above 43 mm. This bag is cut to fit 15 to 43 mm. We will find the right product instead.
  • A ring that stays after the plate comes off, a bruise, a shiny or taut patch, a blister, a dark mark, or pain while wearing it. Take it off and come to us the same day.
  • A stoma that is dark red, purple, grey, black or dry, or that retracts further or protrudes much more than usual. The same day.
  • Cramping pain, a swollen stoma, output that stops, or vomiting. Possible blockage. Hospital, please.

Your Questions About This Convex Ostomy Bag, Answered

What does convex mean?

The adhesive plate is domed rather than flat, so it presses gently into the skin around the stoma and holds the stoma proud of the surface.

Who is a convex ostomy bag for?

Someone whose stoma sits level with the skin or below it, where output tunnels under a flat plate and the bag keeps lifting.

Can I just switch to it myself?

Please come in first. Convexity is a clinical decision, because a domed plate on the wrong abdomen presses where it should not. The assessment takes a few minutes and is free.

Why is the cut range only 15 to 43 mm?

The moulded dome works across a smaller band of openings than a flat plate, which covers 12 to 75 mm. The narrower range is by design.

My stoma is bigger than 43 mm. What then?

Come and talk to us. The answer is a different product rather than this one trimmed harder.

Is there more than one depth of convexity?

Yes, light and deeper versions exist and they are different products. Our doctor will say which depth suits the shape of your abdomen.

Do I need a belt with it?

Many people do. A belt hooked to the loops on the plate holds the dome in even contact, and the two work better together than either alone.

How do I put one on?

Clean dry skin, nothing greasy underneath, press on from the bottom upwards, then hold a warm palm over the whole plate for a minute so the dome settles in.

What should the skin underneath look like?

A faint ring that fades within an hour of the plate coming off is ordinary. A ring that stays, a bruise, a shiny patch, a blister or a dark mark is not.

Should a convex plate hurt?

It should feel like firm contact rather than discomfort. Pain under the plate while wearing it means take it off and come to us the same day.

I have a hernia around my stoma. Can I use convexity?

Possibly, and plenty of people do, but please let our doctor look first. The same goes for recent surgery, fragile skin, radiotherapy or reduced sensation.

Does the depth I need ever change?

Yes. The stoma and the abdomen both change over the first months, so please let our doctor review it after a few weeks.

Why does it cost more than the flat bag?

It is a moulded appliance rather than a flat one. The higher price and the narrower cut range are both properties of the dome.
