Zedcal helps keep your bones and teeth working normally, supplying four hundred milligrams of elemental calcium alongside magnesium, zinc, and vitamin D3 in one film-coated tablet. All four nutrients contribute to normal bone in their own right, and the magnesium and zinc are at amounts that count rather than token traces. Ask our pharmacist how many tablets a day suit you, and our doctor is here if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or buying for a child.

Zedcal Tablets, Calcium with Three Nutrients That Work With It

Zedcal helps keep your bones and teeth working normally, supplying four hundred milligrams of elemental calcium alongside magnesium, zinc and vitamin D3 in one film-coated tablet. Thirty tablets to a pack, from Meyer Organics.

Four nutrients, and each one earns its place rather than decorating the label. Zedcal is made by Meyer Organics in Mumbai and the amounts come from their own published composition. Here is the full panel, what each part contributes, why the four belong together, how to take the tablets so your body actually uses the calcium, and who should have a word with us first.

What Zedcal Supplies

Per film-coated tablet, from the manufacturer’s own composition.

  • Calcium carbonate 1000mg, providing 400mg of elemental calcium, which is fifty per cent of the daily reference intake. Calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal bones and teeth, and it also contributes to normal muscle function, normal neurotransmission, normal blood clotting and normal energy-yielding metabolism. The distinction between the salt and the element matters when you compare products: four hundred milligrams is the figure that counts.
  • Magnesium hydroxide 240mg, providing 100mg of elemental magnesium, twenty-seven per cent of the reference intake. Magnesium contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth, to normal muscle and nervous system function, to normal protein synthesis, to electrolyte balance and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Around half the magnesium in the body is held in bone.
  • Zinc sulphate 11mg, providing 4mg of elemental zinc, forty per cent of the reference intake. Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal bones, to the normal function of the immune system, to the maintenance of normal skin, hair and nails, and to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.
  • Vitamin D3, 200 IU, which is a full hundred per cent of the daily reference intake. Vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and phosphorus, to normal blood calcium levels, and to the maintenance of normal bones, teeth and muscle function. It is the nutrient that lets the calcium in.

All four clear the threshold at which a nutrient claim applies, and three of them carry a bone claim in their own right alongside the calcium. That is a properly built formula rather than a calcium tablet with trace amounts added for the label, and it is worth knowing when you compare it against a cheaper plain calcium.

Why the Four Go Together

Calcium has a journey to make, and each of the other three has a part in it.

Vitamin D opens the door at the start: it is what gets calcium absorbed from the gut and keeps blood levels where they should be, which is why a calcium tablet taken by someone short of vitamin D achieves less than its label suggests. Magnesium works alongside calcium rather than against it, both in bone and in muscle, where calcium signals a contraction and magnesium is involved in the relaxation that follows. Zinc carries a bone claim of its own and adds the immune and skin claims neither of the others has.

Four nutrients covering absorption, structure and recovery is a more complete answer than calcium on its own, and at these amounts it is a genuine one.

How to Take Zedcal Tablets

With food, and please let our pharmacist set the number of tablets with you. We would rather say that plainly than print a figure, because the manufacturer leaves the number to a pharmacist and the right answer depends on how much calcium your diet already gives you. It takes a minute at the counter and you leave with it written down.

Food matters either way, for a specific reason: calcium carbonate needs stomach acid to break it down before any of the calcium can be absorbed, and a meal is what provides that acid. Taken on an empty stomach, considerably less of it gets in.

If our pharmacist sets you more than one tablet a day, spread them across separate meals. Calcium uptake tails off above roughly five hundred milligrams taken at once, so two tablets at two meals deliver more than two together.

Leave about four hours between Zedcal and certain medicines. Calcium binds thyroxine, iron tablets and several antibiotics in the gut, which means the medicine absorbs poorly if they travel together. Four hours apart solves it completely, and our pharmacist will work out the timing with you if you bring your list.

Bone responds over seasons rather than weeks. Take it steadily and judge it by what is measured rather than by how you feel.

Who This Suits

Adults whose diet is light on dairy, whether by preference, by lactose intolerance or by cost. Women after the menopause, when dietary calcium starts to matter more than it did. Adults past fifty generally, as bone turnover shifts. Anyone already taking vitamin D who wants calcium with the magnesium and zinc that work alongside it. People who would rather buy one well-built tablet than assemble three bottles. And anyone comparing calcium products who has learned to look for the elemental figure rather than the salt weight.

Is Zedcal Right for You?

A few things to settle with our pharmacist first. It takes a couple of minutes at the counter.

  • Let us set the number of tablets with you. The manufacturer’s literature gives no figure and the right answer depends on your diet. This is the first thing to sort and the easiest.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding? Calcium needs rise in both, which is exactly why people ask about this product, and the right amount is a medical judgement rather than a label one. Our doctor is here and can see you the same visit.
  • Buying for a child? Ask us. Children are dosed differently, we have Zedcal as a syrup which is the easier format, and our doctor can set a child’s dose properly rather than you dividing an adult tablet.
  • Keep four hours between these and thyroxine, iron tablets or antibiotics. Calcium binds all three in the gut, and the spacing solves it.
  • If you have kidney disease, or a history of kidney stones or high blood calcium, speak to your doctor first, or to ours. These are the situations where a daily calcium supplement needs supervising, and the doctor already treating you should know about it.

Storing It

Keep the pack tightly closed in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight, below 25 degrees, and out of reach of children. A cupboard rather than a windowsill or the shelf above the cooker. Film-coated tablets tolerate humidity better than plain ones, but a Nairobi kitchen is still the wrong place for them. Check the expiry date against how long your pack will last once we have settled the number of tablets with you.

Where to Buy Zedcal in Kenya

Order online and we deliver countrywide, or collect from our pharmacy at Kahawa Sukari Shopping Center, Nairobi. We send orders to Nairobi and every neighbourhood around it — the CBD, Westlands, Parklands, Gigiri, Muthaiga, Runda, Rosslyn, Kitisuru, Lower Kabete, Lavington, Kileleshwa, Kilimani, Karen, Langata, South B, South C, Eastleigh, Buruburu, Donholm, Embakasi, Ngong Road, Kasarani, Roysambu, Zimmerman, Githurai, Ruaka, Banana Hill, Two Rivers, Village Market and Pride Lands — and across Kiambu, Thika, Juja, Ruiru, Kikuyu, Limuru and Ngong.

Beyond the capital we deliver to Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret, Nyeri, Machakos, Athi River, Kitengela, Kajiado, Naivasha, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kisii, Migori, Homa Bay, Siaya, Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, Webuye, Kitale, Nandi Hills, Iten, Kapenguria, Embu, Meru, Chuka, Kerugoya, Murang’a, Othaya, Nyahururu, Nanyuki, Maralal, Isiolo, Marsabit, Moyale, Wajir, Mandera, Garissa, Lodwar, Kitui, Mwingi, Makueni, Emali, Kibwezi, Voi, Taveta, Wundanyi, Mariakani, Diani, Ukunda, Kilifi, Watamu, Malindi, Lamu and Hola. How long a pack lasts depends on the number of tablets our pharmacist sets with you, so tell us and we will work out how many packs cover the months you want.

Across Africa, ask us before you order. We have sent orders to Uganda, Tanzania, Somaliland and as far as Malawi, and we will quote for Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mozambique, Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa and the rest of the continent. Some countries cap the calcium permitted in a food supplement, so tell us the destination and we will confirm the paperwork before the parcel leaves us. We already send Zedcal to Rwanda and Yemen regularly, so the route is a familiar one.

Living abroad? Order from wherever you are and we deliver to your family here in Kenya. Kenyans in the UK, the United States, Canada, South Africa and the Gulf order from us regularly for parents and relatives at home. Calcium is a sensible thing to send, because bone responds over seasons and a steady supply matters more than a single pack. Tell us who it is for and whether they already take vitamin D, and if the person taking it is pregnant or a child, our doctor can set the right amount before the parcel ships.

It is one more step in our vision: building Africa’s most trusted health ecosystem, accessible to everyone, everywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Zedcal used for?

It is a daily calcium supplement for adults. Calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal bones and teeth, magnesium and zinc each contribute to the maintenance of normal bones in their own right, and vitamin D3 contributes to the normal absorption and utilisation of that calcium.

What is in Zedcal tablets, and how much?

Per film-coated tablet: calcium carbonate 1000mg providing 400mg of elemental calcium, which is fifty per cent of the daily reference intake; magnesium hydroxide 240mg providing 100mg of elemental magnesium, twenty-seven per cent; zinc sulphate 11mg providing 4mg of elemental zinc, forty per cent; and vitamin D3 200 IU, a full hundred per cent. Thirty tablets to a pack.

How many Zedcal tablets should I take a day?

Please check with our pharmacist, who will set it with you and write it down. The manufacturer’s literature does not state a figure and the right number depends on how much calcium your diet already provides. It takes a minute at the counter.

Should I take Zedcal with food?

Yes, and for a specific reason. The calcium here is calcium carbonate, which your stomach acid has to break down before any of it can be absorbed, and a meal is what provides that acid. If our pharmacist sets you more than one tablet a day, spread them across separate meals, because calcium uptake tails off above roughly five hundred milligrams at a single sitting.

Can I take Zedcal during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

Calcium needs rise in both, which is why people ask, but the right amount is a medical judgement rather than something to read off a label. Our doctor is here at the pharmacy and can see you the same visit.

Can children take Zedcal tablets?

Children are dosed differently, so please do not divide an adult tablet. We carry Zedcal as an oral suspension, which is the easier format for a child, and our doctor can set the dose properly.

What is the difference between Zedcal tablets and Zedcal syrup?

The tablets are for adults and the syrup suits children, infants over six months and anyone who finds tablets hard to swallow. The amounts differ, so they are not interchangeable spoon for tablet. Tell us who it is for and we will point you at the right one.

Does it matter when I take Zedcal alongside my other medicines?

Yes. Calcium binds thyroxine, iron tablets and several antibiotics in the gut, so leave about four hours between them. Bring us your list and our pharmacist will set the timing with you.

Can I take Zedcal with another calcium or vitamin D supplement?

Tell us what the others are first. The total across everything is what matters, and several products on our shelves carry calcium, vitamin D or both. We will add it up with you in a minute.

How long before Zedcal makes a difference?

Bone responds over seasons rather than weeks and there is nothing to feel day to day. Take it steadily and judge it by what your doctor measures rather than by how you feel.
