Ranferon-12 Syrup, Iron in Liquid Form
Ranferon syrup helps rebuild the red blood cells that carry oxygen around the body, and because it is a liquid it can be measured by the spoonful, which is what makes it the family bottle rather than an adult’s capsule.
It suits children, pregnant women on clinical advice, older people, anyone who struggles to swallow capsules, and households where more than one person needs iron at different amounts. Ranbaxy build it as a complete haematinic: iron with folic acid and vitamin B12, the three nutrients a red blood cell is actually made from, with vitamin C and zinc alongside them, in a bottle that can serve a child in the morning and an adult in the evening.
How to Take Ranferon Syrup
For adults, two teaspoons three times a day when iron is being corrected, or one teaspoon once or twice a day as a steady daily amount. A teaspoon is 5ml.
The higher schedule is a therapeutic amount, used to bring a confirmed deficiency back up, and it is a decision to make with a doctor or with our pharmacist rather than alone. The lower one is what most people take who are simply keeping their iron topped up.
Take it with or just after food, and shake the bottle before measuring.
Ranferon Syrup for Children
Children from five to twelve take one teaspoon once or twice a day, which is why the syrup exists at all: a capsule gives you one amount and a spoon gives you any amount you need.
For a child under five, ask us first. Iron is genuinely harmful to a small child in excess, and the right amount depends on weight and on why the child needs it. That is a two-minute conversation at our counter and it is worth having. Keep the bottle high up and out of reach, whatever the age.
Ranferon Syrup in Pregnancy
Iron and folic acid are both important in pregnancy and are routinely issued by antenatal clinics, which is why this comes up so often.
Take it in pregnancy on your doctor’s or midwife’s advice. The reason is arithmetic rather than alarm: if the clinic has already given you iron and folic acid, what matters is your total rather than accidentally taking two lots. Bring what you were given to our counter and we will add it up with you.
What Is in Each Spoonful
Iron as ferric ammonium citrate and ferrous fumarate, with folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin C and zinc. A 5ml teaspoon carries around 40mg of elemental iron in the reference formulation.
Each part has a job. Iron makes haemoglobin, folic acid and B12 are both needed to build a red blood cell properly, vitamin C increases how much iron is absorbed, and zinc supports immunity. Confirm the exact amounts against the label on your bottle, since manufacturers adjust formulations by market.
What to Expect
Energy usually begins to lift within two to four weeks, well before the iron stores are refilled, because the body puts new iron straight to work.
Refilling the stores takes three months or more. Stopping as soon as you feel better is the commonest mistake anyone makes with iron. Darker stools are normal and expected. A little stomach upset in the first week usually settles if the dose is taken after food or split into smaller amounts.
Getting the Most Iron In
Strong chai with a meal binds iron, because of the tannins in tea, so leave an hour either side of the dose. That one habit is worth more than most people expect, because chai with the meal is the ordinary Kenyan way to eat and the effect on iron absorption is measurable.
Vitamin C works the other way and increases absorption. There is already some in the syrup, and an orange, a guava or a tomato-rich meal alongside it improves the return further. For a child, a glass of fresh juice with the spoonful does the same job and makes the dose easier to give.
Who Ranferon Syrup Is For
Children who need iron, and the parents measuring it. Pregnant women on clinical advice. Older people and anyone who finds capsules hard to swallow. People recovering from illness, surgery or childbirth. And households where two or three people need iron at different amounts from one bottle.
Is Ranferon Syrup Right for You?
Iron is among the most useful things in a pharmacy and one of the few worth being careful with. Our pharmacist is glad to go through it with you first if any of these apply:
- You are buying for a child under five, or for any child where nobody has said how much to give. Iron in excess is genuinely harmful to a small child, so keep the bottle high up and let us size the dose with you.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding, so we can add up what your clinic has already issued.
- You have atrophic gastritis or reduced kidney function, both of which the manufacturer asks you to check first, or haemochromatosis, where iron accumulates.
- You are on the higher three-times-a-day schedule, or have been taking iron for several months, since a therapeutic amount over a long period should be reviewed and the stores checked.
Tiredness has many causes and low iron is only one. If nobody has tested you, a blood test first will tell you whether this is the right answer.
Storing It
Keep the bottle closed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, and well out of reach of children. Use it before the expiry date on the label.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Ranferon syrup dosage for adults?
Two teaspoons three times a day when iron is being corrected, or one teaspoon once or twice a day as a steady daily amount. A teaspoon is 5ml. The higher schedule is a therapeutic amount and is worth agreeing with a doctor or our pharmacist rather than deciding alone. Take it with or just after food.
What is the dosage for children?
Children from five to twelve take one teaspoon once or twice a day. For a child under five, ask us first: iron is genuinely harmful to a small child in excess, and the right amount depends on weight and on why the child needs it.
Can I give it to a baby?
Speak to us or your clinic before giving iron to a baby or a child under five. It is not a refusal, it is a two-minute conversation to get the amount right, and it is the one product where that matters most. Keep the bottle out of reach at every age.
Is Ranferon safe in pregnancy?
Take it in pregnancy on your doctor’s or midwife’s advice. Iron and folic acid are both important in pregnancy and most antenatal clinics already issue them, so what matters is adding up your total rather than taking two lots by accident. Bring what the clinic gave you to our counter and we will work it out with you.
How long before it works?
Energy usually begins to lift within two to four weeks, which is the body using new iron rather than the stores being full. Refilling the stores takes three months or more, and stopping as soon as you feel better is the commonest mistake with iron.
What is in it?
Iron as ferric ammonium citrate and ferrous fumarate, with folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin C and zinc. A 5ml teaspoon carries around 40mg of elemental iron in the reference formulation. Check the label on your bottle, since formulations vary by market.
Does it cause weight gain?
Iron itself adds no weight. What people notice is appetite and energy returning: someone short of iron often eats poorly because everything is an effort, and when that lifts they eat properly again and regain weight they had lost. It is the recovery being noticed, rather than the syrup.
Syrup or capsules, which should I buy?
The syrup for children, for anyone who struggles to swallow capsules, and for anyone who needs the amount adjusted by the spoonful. The capsules for an adult who wants one a day, swallowed and forgotten. Ask our pharmacist and we will match it to the person.
Should I take it with food?
Yes, with or just after a meal, and shake the bottle first. Leave an hour either side before strong chai or coffee, because the tannins in tea bind iron and stop some of it being absorbed.
Will it darken the stools or stain teeth?
Darker stools are normal with any iron. With a liquid it is also worth rinsing the mouth or following the dose with water, which keeps any staining off the teeth.
Who should avoid it?
Anyone allergic to the ingredients, and anyone with haemochromatosis, where iron accumulates. The manufacturer also asks people with atrophic gastritis or reduced kidney function to check first. Come and talk to us.
